I was born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland. After a chance work experience placement in a veterinary clinic during my school years, I decided to change my career plan from zoology to veterinary medicine. I entered Cambridge Veterinary School in October 2008, and am now in my 4th year of studies.
In my 3rd year, I studied for a BA in Infectious Diseases, completing a research project investigating transgenic approaches to control influenza infections. The ability to tackle problems like this awakened my interest in conducting research.
Like most other veterinary students, I enjoy all kinds of animals, despite not having any pets of my own. Outside of my course, I like to spend my time reading, listening to and playing music, cycling, going for walks in the country, and watching films.
My long-term career goals aren’t exactly fixed in stone, but I would love to end up using my scientific background to embark on a career in research, perhaps after spending some years gaining clinical experience. Ideally, I would like to investigate infectious diseases of veterinary interest, and I hope that the Leadership Program will affirm that decision!
