Dr. Buckles joined the Department of Biomedical Sciences as an assistant professor in July of 2004. She received her DVM and MS from The Ohio State University in 1996. After graduation she began her training in anatomic pathology as a resident at The University of Tennessee and did her third year of training as the Senior Resident at the University of California, Davis. In September of 2000 she became board-certified in anatomic pathology and a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). Prior to coming to Cornell, Dr. Buckles did her Ph.D. research at The University of California, Davis in the Graduate Group in Comparative Pathology.
Research Interests My laboratory is actively engaged in studying the molecular pathogenesis of Infectious Bronchitis virus, an economically important coronavirus of domestic poultry. Infection with this virus is characterized by respiratory, reproductive and renal disease and leads to significant losses in egg and meat productions. Efforts to control the disease are hampered by the emergence of new viral strains rendering vaccinations ineffective. My current research works to elucidate the immune response of birds to this virus and I hope to determine how viral and avian factors work together to cause different disease outcomes in the animals. The results of this basic research will hopefully one day result in the production of more effective IBV vaccines and prove beneficial to both the birds and the producers. Additionally, I have a background in ecology and I am particularly interested in the diseases of birds and wildlife. Specifically I am interested in using anatomic pathology and molecular biology to aid in management of wild animal populations and to help determine how diseases might affect endangered species recovery efforts. During my training I have had the opportunity to assist with research projects on a wide variety of species including Common rheas, ducks, domestic chickens, domestic cats, foxes, and California sea lions. As a diagnostician my specialties are in wildlife, birds and poultry. I am dedicated to the training and mentoring of residents in Anatomic Pathology as well as DVM students with an interest in the field. I am currently one of two faculty advisors to the Cornell Student Chapter of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists.
