Cornell Veterinary Medicine

Marieke Opsteegh
Utrecht University

Class of 2006

Background: I was born 1981 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. As a child I already aspired becoming a veterinarian and in 1999 I was able to start Veterinary Medicine at Utrecht University. During my study I became increasingly interested in a research career and in 2003 Utrecht University offered me the chance to get a year of research experience. As I am especially interested in tropical infectious diseases I participated in a project called "Etiology of Bovine Cerebral Theileriosis in Northern Tanzania". I really enjoyed this year of research and it has strengthened my affinity for research.

Interests: I love to travel, and especially loved my trips to Romania and Tanzania, because I worked there. I like being outdoors, and that is why horseback riding, hiking and inline skating are my favorite sports. I also enjoy spending time with my friends; it is great to go out together, watch a movie, or play a board game.

Career Goal: After graduation, I hope to continue in research that attributes to both food security, as well as public health in developing countries.
