New Horizons Program
Biomedical Research Training for Undergraduates: Summer Research Experiences
|
The Program:
Cornell University has received an award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that will provide a unique opportunity for undergraduates in the physical sciences and engineering to gain experience in biomedical research. The program targets students who have completed their junior or senior years. Selected students will be supported during the summer of 2006 for a period of ten weeks. Awards will be made effective June 5, 2006.
The program combines faculty-guided research in cell and molecular biology with vocational counseling and professional enrichment activities. Students will be able to participate in a structured mentoring system with students more advanced in their career progression. Research experiences are offered in, but not limited to, cancer biology, genetics, infectious diseases, and in signaling mechanisms associated with cell growth, cell movement, and cancer cell metastases.
The participating faculty are nationally competitive research scientists who have excellent mentoring records. The experience is structured to encourage a commitment to a research career while simultaneously enhancing critical capacity and communication skills.
|
Program Opportunity:
Research: Research projects are selected for their excellence as learning experiences and their relevance to the program, bearing in mind what can realistically be accomplished while the program is in session. Insight into the planning and conduct of biomedically relevant experiments, data evaluation and how life scientists effectively use their human and material resources are related objectives of this initiative. Participating students will present their research findings in a public forum.
Vocational Counseling: Awardees will explore opportunities for research careers in the academy, government, or industry. Counselors will recommend undergraduate courses that will allow interested students to prepare themselves for graduate training in the biomedical sciences.
