Cornell Summer Research and Leadership Program
Bing Yun Zhu
University of Sydney
Background: My family and I emigrated from Shanghai to Sydney when I was four years old. In Australia, I discovered a love for animals and decided to study veterinary science at the age of seven. Throughout my veterinary degree, I worked at a vet hospital on weekends and spent some holidays aiding PhD studies and conducting small research projects. I was especially partial to epidemiology and microbiology classes during the veterinary course and I enjoyed the research related rotations of my final year the most.
Interests: In my free time I like to train my dogs to do a plethora of tricks (perhaps to make up for the amount of time a vet degree takes me away from them!). I have won state tournaments in Taekwondo and enjoy many sports, especially swimming, ice skating, and horse riding. I love learning new skills and am eager to add skateboarding and trapeze to my list of sports. When I'm feeling not so active, I indulge in the arts and sketch (usually my dogs!), play piano, dance and sing.
Career Goal: After graduation, I wish to commence a PhD project, hopefully in the fields of epidemiology, infectious diseases or zoonoses. I also plan to spend a short time in rural mixed practice to concrete my clinical skills, which will be beneficial to future areas of research I wish |
