The Program in Infection and Pathobiology brings together Cornell scientists studying the interplay between host and pathogen/toxin in a multidepartmental program. Faculty from the College of Veterinary Medicine and from various departments in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences are members of this program. Numerous Graduate Fields also participate. Thus, the program facilitates broad interactions between departments and graduate fields that share common interests in host-pathogen interactions and generates a graduate student and post-doctoral trainee community through common seminars and retreats that cross the boundaries between fields and departments. |
This program is designed to allow interested students to work towards a DVM and PhD degree in less time than it would take to complete both programs sequentially. It provides advanced education designed to prepare students for careers in biomedical research and for leadership roles in the biomedical and veterinary arenas. For students interested in a research career, integration of the graduate and veterinary curricula enables a learning process that allows a multidirectional flow of information, insights, and perspectives among basic science, preclinical, and clinical courses. |

Cornell offers a unique environment for graduate studies combining as it does the strengths of a research-oriented veterinary college and nationally recognized basic research programs in the physical sciences, engineering and life sciences. The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University offers up to eight Research Assistantships for veterinary graduates who want to pursue advanced studies leading to the Ph.D. degree. An additional assistantship is reserved for a minority applicant. Training is offered through the fields of Comparative Biomedical Sciences (previously Veterinary Medicine), Immunology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Toxicology and Zoology. The opportunities span the spectrum of the biomedical sciences; however, areas of special strength include cancer biology, medical genetics, infectious diseases and reproductive studies. |
