DVM Graduate Studies

The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Cornell University is committed to providing educational opportunities to DVM graduate students who wish to pursue advanced studies leading to the PhD degree. Training is offered through the Graduate Fields that are located primarily in the CVM, including: Comparative Biomedical Sciences, Immunology, Pharmacology, Molecular and Integrative Physiology, and Zoology. The opportunities for research span the spectrum of the biomedical sciences; however, areas of special strength include cancer biology, medical genetics, infectious diseases and reproductive studies.

Cornell offers a unique environment for graduate studies, as it combines the strengths of a research-oriented veterinary college with nationally recognized basic research programs in the physical sciences, engineering, and life sciences. The College's new Veterinary Medical Center and state-of-the-art research facilities are among the finest in the world.

DVM Graduate Admissions:
DVM graduates who are interested in applying to a Graduate Field must follow the application procedure specific to the Graduate Field of their choice. Among the Graduate Fields typically chosen are:

In addition to completing the application requirements set by the Graduate Field, all DVM graduate applicants must submit the following materials by the Graduate Field application deadline:

  • Application for DVM Graduate Students available as MS Word Document or as a pdf file
  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • One copy each of up to three of applicant's most significant publications

For the Fields of Comparative Biomedical Sciences, Immunology, Pharmacology, and Molecular and Integrative Physiology, the deadline is December 15. For the Graduate Field of Zoology, the deadline is February 1.

DVM Graduate Admissions Timeline:
Each Graduate Field's Admissions Committee will review all DVM graduate applications beginning in January, and make recommendations to a separate DVM Graduate Admissions Committee for further consideration and funding determination. The DVM Graduate Admissions Committee's recommendation will be forwarded to the Dean for final review. Admissions decisions will reflect the College's academic and research missions and its commitment to equal opportunity and affirmative action. Domestic applicants being considered for admission will be asked to attend an Interview / Recruitment Weekend in early March. All applicants will be notified of outcomes in March. Successful candidates are not obligated to accept an offer before April 15, as agreed upon by the Council of Graduate Schools' Resolution.

Admissions Criteria:
The following criteria will be considered in evaluating DVM graduate applicants (not listed in any particular order).

  • Completed courses
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Research and work experience
  • Career goal / Rationale
  • GRE scores
  • Undergraduate and DVM grade point averages
  • TOEFL score (if relevant)
