Can FeLV survive in the environment?

It has recently come to the attention of the Feline Health Center (FHC) at Cornell that some cat owners who are caring for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) positive cats have strong but varying opinions about the survivability of FeLV in the environment. Does FeLV survive in the environment for any length of time? Is the statement “if it dries it dies” accurate for FeLV or other feline viruses?
Let’s look at the facts.

Awards for Excellence

Dr. Maza, a lecturer in Anatomy at Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine and a veterinary consultant for the Cornell Feline Health Center's 1-800-KITTYDR Service, receives 2008 Teaching Excellence Award from the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. John Parker, an Assistant Professor of Virology at Cornell's Baker Institute for Animal Health, received Pfizer Animal Health's Award for Research Excellence for his research entitled "Feline Calicivirus-Receptor Interactions - Insights." Dr. Parker's research has been funded in part by the Cornell Feline Health Center.

Know Heartworms

The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) has joined with the American Heartworm Society (AHS) in creating the KNOW Heartworms information campaign. "Heartworm prevention in cats is extremely important," noted the late Dr. James Richards, former director of the Cornell Feline Health Center, "because the dangers of heartworm disease are much more significant that we'd previously believed." < more >

CATalyst

CATalyst Summit Declared a Success: It’s All About the Cat! The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) announced on February 18, 2008 the successful outcome of the CATalyst Summit, which was held Feb. 5-6 in Palm Springs, Calif., with initial underwriting from Pfizer Animal Health. Attendees were led by AAFP and represented more than 30 leading organizations and companies including the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Cornell Feline Health Center, Morris Animal Foundation, Winn Feline Foundation and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
