Parasitology

The discipline of Parasitology within the department is represented by seven faculty members (see the list below) with active research and teaching programs. Protozoan and helminth parasites with importance to hman and animal health are studied. Research in this area is carried out primarily at the cell and molecular lelvels, with an emphasis on host-parasite interactions (Appleton, Clark, Denkers, Hesse, and Russell), as well as the immune response to infection (Appleton, Denkers and Hesse). Additional interests include environmental transmission (Bowman), parasite invasion (Russell), vaccine development (Clark), and mechanisms of pathogenesis (Denkers and Hesse). All of the faculty below also participate in the graduate program in Biological and Biomedical Sciences and inter-college graduate research program in Infection and Pathobilogy.
