Differential Muscle Function in Locomotion: The Equine Forelimb as a Model System of "Gearing" in Running Gaits
Dr. John Hermanson
Abstract
To demonstrate the degree of eccentric contraction exhibited in the short and deep digital flexor muscles of the equine forelimb during normal walk, trot, and canter gaits. This represents a new paradigm for muscle function during locomotion that does not involve the production of work by a muscle but instead highlights the importance of elastic energy storage during cyclic activity.
