CORNELL SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION QUESTIONS
When is the Cornell Supplemental Application available?
The Cornell Supplemental Application typically goes live at the same time as the VMCAS. The first week of June is the target date for both applications.
How will I know when my documents have arrived?
When you begin your Cornell Supplemental Application a tracking page is also established. You would use the same email address and password you used for the supplemental application to view your tracking page.
What if I am not applying this year, but want to see what an application looks like?
We encourage you to look at the application worksheet rather than start an actual application. The worksheet is a printable representation of the actual supplemental application. You can look at it on-line or print it off.
Do I have to wait until I submit my application before I have transcripts or other documents sent?
It is a very good idea to have documents sent in as soon as possible to meet deadlines.
How should I send my transcripts?
Official transcripts will be sent to VMCAS. Deadline is September 1st. More information can be found at www.aavmc.org.
If some of my courses transferred to my home college and appear on their transcript, do I still need to have transcripts sent form all the colleges?
YES! You should send official transcripts from all the colleges you attended to VMCAS.
When is the VMCAS application available?
The VMCAS application is typically available in early June.
How do I get to the VMCAS application?
The link to the VMCAS application is on the Association of American Veterinary Medical school Colleges (AAVMC) web site at www.aavmc.org.
When is the VMCAS application due?
The VMCAS application and three electronic letters of evaluation (eLors) are due October 2, 2013 at 1:00pm eastern standard time. Transcripts are due by September 1st. It is highly recommended to submit your application and evaluations by September 1st as well.
LETTERS OF EVALUATION QUESTIONS
For the animal/veterinary/biomedical research experience letters, can they be through the VMCAS eLor system or do I need to use the Cornell evaluation forms?
You can use any of the evaluation methods to get the letters to us. We just ask you not to duplicate letters. If you have one sent from an evaluator through the eLor system, don't make them do it again through the Cornell system. It will reach us and we will match it to the experience listed on your application.
What if I don't have a letter for an experience?
You can list all experiences on the VMCAS without a letter, and we do read this as part of your application. Those experiences listed on the Cornell Supplemental Application that have letters will provide a bit more information, so always helpful if you can get a letter from someone at each experience.
Who should write the letter from my college?
For the academic evaluation, you can ask your advisor or a faculty member who you have taken classes from. Whoever you choose you will want to make sure they can provide the Admissions Committee with information about your academic abilities in college.
Are all my supporting documents (additional evaluations not sent through VMCAS (optional), GRE scores, etc.) due by October 15th?
Yes, all supporting documents are due by October 15th. Our admissions committee begins reading right away, so your application may be considered incomplete if all your documents are not in our office in time.
How far back can I go with these experiences?
If you can get an evaluation from someone, you are welcome to list experiences as far back as you can go. However, we do ask that you list up to 5 of your "most significant" experiences on the Cornell Supplemental application that you can also provide letters of evaluation.
What is the Admissions Committee looking for in a letter of evaluation?
The Admissions Committee has written guidelines for evaluators that you will want to give to those writing letters for your experiences. Your evaluators will find this helpful and also provide useful insight for your application. The link to the "Guidelines for Evaluators" can be found in the right sidebar.
What if more than one person wants to write a letter from one experience?
If you have multiple evaluators for an experience, make sure you divide the hours. If you list each experience with the full time spent for each evaluator it will appear as if you have two or three times that number. For example, if you work in a veterinary practice for 1000 hours, and there are 2 veterinarians who would be writing you evaluations, then you would want to split the 1,000 hours between them. So, you may have worked 800 with one veterinarian and 200 with the other.
When do the evaluations need to be in the admissions office?
The Cornell Supplemental Application and all supporting documentation should be in by the October 15, 2013 deadline. This includes all evaluations, transcripts, standardized test scores, etc. Note, any evaluations sent through the VMCAS eLor system need to be submitted by their October 2nd deadline. They will then forward the evaluations to our office.
GREs AND MCATs QUESTIONS
When are GRE or MCAT scores due in the admissions office?
What is the last date I can take the GREs?
We recommend you take the GREs no later than SEPTEMBER 30, 2013, for the application cycle for the Class of 2018. That way you are assured the scores will reach us in time for the application deadline. Scores received after the deadline will not be used.
Should I take any of the subject tests on the GREs?
We do not require the subject tests. For the purpose of the DVM degree program at the College of Veterinary Medicine, you need only take and submit the verbal and quantitative scores from the GREs
If I speak another language, should I take the TOEFL?
The TOEFL (Test of English for a Foreign Language) is required if English is not your first language and your education is taught in a language other than English. You will also be required to take the GREs
Is there a required TOEFL score?
We require a score of 600 or higher on a paper-based test and 100 or higher on a Internet-based test. Information about the TOEFL and to register for the test can be found at the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
How would I request the review of one of my courses that appears to meet a prerequisite course description, but the title is different?
You can complete a prerequisite course substitution form to show the course meets the requirements. It is best if there is a course syllabus, but in some cases the course description will work. Also, a faculty member writing a letter indicating the specifics of the course that meet the requirement is also acceptable.
Will a prerequisite substitution form be reviewed after the September 15th deadline?
Yes, prerequisite substitution forms will be reviewed after the deadline. However, because the busy time of year, the response time could be delayed. For the best response, it is best to get your request in prior to the September 15th deadline.
If I get a C- in a prerequisite course, should I take it again?
A C- meets our prerequisite requirement. You may want to take a higher level course in the same subject area to show your ability to grasp more difficult and new information. However, if you feel that you did not grasp the information in the course and retaking it will provide you with a better understanding of the content, then you may want to take it again. It is always wise to consult your advisors at your college to make sure this is allowed and if you receive financial aid this will not be compromised.
If I get a D or lower in a prerequisite course, should I retake the course?
Yes, you will want to retake any of the prerequisite courses where you received less than a C-. If the course was an introductory course and you take an upper level course in the same subject area with lab and appropriate credits, then this could be used for the requirement. For example, if you received a D in general biology II, you could take an upper level course, like Genetics with a lab and receive a grade of C- or better, this course could be used for half of the general biology requirement.
What should I do if I took AP biology and did not have to take general biology I and II at my college?
If you were granted credit for general biology I and II through Advanced Placement or another assessment then we would look for you to take a year of upper level biology with labs for minimally 6 semester credits (for example, anatomy and physiology I and II with labs; cell biology and genetics with labs; etc.).
What if I was waived out of English with advanced placement or another assessment?
We require a semester of English Composition or a writing concentrated course and a semester of English Literature or Public Speaking. If you did not have to take these courses, you will want to look at your college catalog to make sure you fulfill the requirement with other courses. We will take a course that is designated ‘writing intensive' or if the syllabus indicated 50% or more of the final grade was based on written work. The other half of the requirement also needs to be accomplished prior to enrolling. Additionally, a score of 650/163 or higher on the GRE verbal will also satisfy the requirement.
Can I apply lacking a prerequisite course?
Yes, you can apply lacking up to 12 credits of prerequisite courses. You are encouraged to have minimally one semester of organic chemistry completed.
When do I have to have the prerequisite courses completed?
We will need final transcripts with all outstanding prerequisite courses completed by the end of the spring term prior to enrolling. The summer before enrolling is not an option for additional course work. The deadline for final transcripts for the Class of 2017 is June 15, 2013.
What if one of my courses lacks a lab?
Labs are required for all science prerequisite courses. If you college offers the lecture, but not the lab, you may want to either see if a faculty member would do an independent lab for that course or take the lab (or lab and course) at another college or university.
What if my biochemistry is only for 3 semester credits and the requirement if 4 semester credits?
There are colleges that teach biochemistry for 3 semester credits instead of 4. If this is the case at your college you can do one of three things:
If I am under the quarter system and meet the quarter credit requirement with just 2 quarters, do I still need to take the third quarter?
Yes, you need to meet all the requirements listed for year course. For example, for organic chemistry you will need a FULL year, minimally 9 quarter credits, AND labs. The full year (or three quarters) provides all the content that a student in the two semester course would take. So, the important thing to remember when meeting these prerequisite course requirements is to fulfill all the criteria listed. These courses are selected to prepare you for the veterinary medical curriculum.
When should I have my official college transcripts sent to VMCAS?
The deadline for transcripts to be sent to VMCAS is September 1st.
Should I collect my transcripts and send them in?
VMCAS instructions will indicate how transcripts are to be sent. Visit www.aavmc.org for details.
When should I send in the Residency Form if I live in NY?
During the application process.
Who should I give the Dean's Certification to complete?
Please give the Dean's Certification to your Dean of Students or Dean of Student Affairs to complete.
When should I submit the Dean's Certification?
It is recommended it be submitted during the application process. It is ultimately required of all admitted and alternates, by March 15, 2013. However, if it is submitted during the application process, then there is one less piece of paperwork to complete if admitted or an alternate.
I have a resume, should I send that in?
Resumes are not required and the information is collected on both applications that would be covered on a resume. You are welcome to submit one, but again not required.
Are students encouraged to reapply?
Yes, students are encouraged to reapply. When decisions are made at the end of the application cycle, students who are not made an offer of admission are encouraged to make a post-applicant counseling appointment. In this appointment they will be able to have a discussion regarding ways to strengthen their application.
Can I reuse documents?
Yes, you can reuse evaluations. Please note that VMCAS will require three letters to go through their eLor system, so make sure you have those three evaluators ready to do this. You will find two opportunities to let us know what documents to reuse in the Cornell Supplemental Application.
Do I have to complete both applications again?
Yes, you do need to fill out the VMCAS and Cornell Supplemental applications once again and submit them both electronically. Some documents can be reused, but the actual application content must be completed once again. Typically, there will be some changes as a year has passed and applicants may want to include new information in the essay and short answer statements.
Who should take the Test of English for a Foreign Language (TOEFL)?
Students whose native language is not English and their education is taught in a language other than English should take the TOEFL.
Is there a minimum score I need to achieve?
A score of 600 on the ‘Paper based' test and 100 on the ‘Internet Based' test is required.
Do I need to have my study abroad courses sent through an international credential service?
Yes, if your education was taught in a country other than the US, then you will want to have your grades and credits converted to the US system. The exception would be study abroad courses if they appear on your home college transcript. However, if you took a prerequisite course while studying abroad and it was transferred back to your institution without a grade you would want to have that course grade and credit converted.
As an international student, if I take the TOEFL, do I still need to take the GREs?
Yes, everyone needs to take either the GREs or MCATs to complete the application process.
Who can apply for the Early Acceptance Program?
Students who are finishing their second year of college, earning 60 semester credits may apply. They must also have all but 12 credits of prerequisite course work completed. There is additional academic criteria students will want to review.
When is the Early Application available?
The Early Application is available March 1 each year with a deadline of June 1st. Students are notified of their status by the second week of July.
When is the Transfer Application Due?
The two deadlines for transfer applications are June 1st and October 15th.
