New Application Procedures for All U.S. Veterinary Applicants

VMCAS (Veterinary Medical Application Service) is dramatically changing application procedures this summer. Instead of sending transcripts and letters to VMCAS, applicants will send these documents to each veterinary school. (So if an applicant has attended three colleges and has had three reference letters and wishes to apply to six schools, the applicant would need 18 transcripts and 18 letters and mail 3 of each to each veterinary school.)

Cornell will now allow applicants to bypass VMCAS and apply directly at our web site. Our NY residents must apply directly at the Cornell web site. Our web application will be available July 1 and will cost $75 (less than the VMCAS application). The VMCAS application will be available August 13, and Cornell/VMCAS applicants would pay $50 to VMCAS and $40 to Cornell. We strongly encourage all potential applicants to download “Preliminary Application Instructions for Cornell DVM Admissions” well before they begin the application process. All applicants must submit their supporting documents either before they apply, or with the application. We prefer that all documents arrive to us in one envelope, the same envelope that contains the printed hard copy of the application with the applicant’s signature.

Our NY Applicants Must Apply at Our Cornell Web Site

Last year VMCAS delayed in transmitting material to the veterinary schools. To avoid this potential problem this year, we are requiring all NY applicants to apply directly at our Cornell web site http://www.vet.cornell.edu/admissions/approceed.htm by October 5, 2001. If NY applicants follow our instructions and submit all supporting documents either before applying or with their application, we would anticipate having decisions made by January 2002, perhaps sooner. Please download “Preliminary Application Instructions for Cornell DVM Admissions” at http://www.vet.cornell.edu/admissions/appdocuments.htm

Am I Considered a NY Resident? Or NJ or NH Resident?

State residency often affects veterinary admission. Some applicants are unsure of their state residency. To help applicants understand whether they are a NY resident, we have developed a residency worksheet. We would like all NY residents to submit this worksheet with their application. We would also prefer NJ and NH residents to submit this worksheet when they apply. In future years, this worksheet will be an absolute requirement for those claiming NY, NJ or NH residency. The form is available at http://www.vet.cornell.edu/admissions/appdocuments.htm

May I Substitute Courses for Cornell’s Pre-Requisites?

Some applicants have not taken microbiology or biochemistry and often wonder whether another course could substitute for either of these prerequisites. To help students understand how easy it can be to substitute a course, we have developed a “Pre-Requisite Substitution Request” form. This form cannot be submitted during our peak workload season (September 1 through March 15). If you wish to explore whether a course you have taken or wish to take will meet our requirement(s), please download the form at http://www.vet.cornell.edu/admissions/appdocuments.htm
