The Man Who Had It All…and Gave It All Away: A Dialogue Between Chuck Feeney ’56 and President David J. Skorton
In 1984, Chuck Feeney had what many aspire to: a global corporation that had made him a billionaire. The boy from Elizabeth, New Jersey, who had grown up in a working class Irish neighborhood and received a GI Bill degree from Cornell's School of Hotel Administration, had hit the big time with Duty Free Shoppers. But while he loved to make money, he had no use for it. So at age 52, he created the Atlantic Philanthropies, to which he turned over nearly his entire fortune. One of the most generous philanthropic funds that exists, AP was also one of the most secretive until the sale of Duty Free forced Chuck into the limelight, and his authorized biography, The Billionaire Who Wasn't, was published in 2007. Only then was the world made privy to Chuck's and AP's extraordinary impact over time - providing billions of dollars to institutions around the globe to advance education, human rights, and public health, and to assist those who need it the most. Hear the story of how Chuck has become one of the most influential philanthropists of all time and, through his support of Cornell, one of the true builders of our university.
