Dr. Cooper, Professor of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He obtained the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Science with First Class Honors and the University Medal from Sydney University, Australia, in 1972. Following a brief period in practice, he returned to Sydney University to research the pathogenesis of tick paralysis and was awarded the Ph.D. degree in 1976. He came to the College of Veterinary Medicine for residency training in anatomic pathology and passed the certifiying examination of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 1977. He joined the permanent faculty of the Department of Pathology at Cornell University in 1978. Dr. Cooper's research is supported by the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the National Institutes of Health.
My major research interests lie in the study of neuromuscular diseases of animals, particularly inherited diseases, with a view to furthering our understanding of similar diseases in humans. Currently the major emphasis is on the study of X-linked muscular dystrophy of the Duchenne type in dogs. In our studies we utilize a variety of techniques including molecular and biochemical analysis, immunohistochemistry, cell culture and light and electron microscopy. We are involved in a major effort to develop gene therapy for this disease. Periodically we also study other inherited myopathies, including a recently discovered mitochondrial myopathy.
I am actively involved in the D.V.M. teaching program and am director of Function and Dysfunction, the third foundation course in the college's new curriculum. I am involved also in the residency and graduate training programs and am a member of the graduate faculty at Cornell University. Through my laboratory I offer a diagnostic muscle biopsy service to the Teaching Hospital and perform most of the electrodiagnostic (EMG) examinations in the Companion Animal Hospital.
