This horse had a subtle lameness. His evaluation began with lunging. Next, we performed a bone scan in which a radioactive isotope was injected into the body. Any areas of inflammation attract the isotope and appear as dark spots in the image. Further imaging using radiographs and ultrasound were used to confirm the diagnosis.
