Infected umbilicusInfected
Umbilicus 1:45

When a foal is born, the umbilical cord should stay intact, and then it shrinks down and contracts so that the blood is no longer flowing from the foal to the mare's placenta. But when the cord breaks, it can get infected.

To prepare this foal for surgery, his mouth is washed out, then general anesthesia is induced, and the surgical area is clipped, prepared and draped. An incision is made around the umbilicus removing the infected mass. The area is rinsed and then the body wall and skin are closed with absorbable sutures. The abdomen is sprayed in order to securely place a sterile drape over the incision. After recovery, the foal is re-united with his mother before going home the next day.
