The members of the Davisson Lab at Cornell University's Departments of Biomedical Sciences (College of Veterinary Medicine) and Cell & Developmental Biology (Weill Cornell Medical College) welcome you to our website. We are a diverse group of investigators gathered in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York and in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. As you journey through this site, you will see that our research, though wide-ranging, is centered on the common theme of establishing links between the renin-angiotensin system, oxidative stress and cardiovascular disease. We invite you to explore these pages to learn more about our lab and hope that you will become as intrigued with our work as we are!

Our research focuses on the basic mechanisms of function, control and signaling in the cardiovascular system in health and disease. Investigations employ the interdisciplinary approach of "functional genomics," an endeavor at the interface of classical physiology and molecular biology. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying hypertension, heart failure and the pregnancy-induced cardiovascular syndrome pre-eclampsia are the main focuses of our research efforts.

Colin’s was one of only 17 grants funded out of 150 applications. Congratulations, Colin! 12/19/12

  • Dr. Robin Davisson was awarded the 2012 Arthur C. CorcoranDavisson Memorial Lecture by the American Heart Association’s Council for High Blood Pressure Research. One of the highest honors in the field, the lecture was established in 1977 to honor Arthur C. Corcoran for his contributions to hypertension research.  It is presented at the annual meeting of this Council by a distinguished honoree from the field of hypertension. Congratulations, Robin! 10/1/12

  • Dr. Colin Young, postdoctoral associate in the Davisson Lab received a New Investigator Award at the 2012 American Heart Association Council for High Blood Pressure Research meeting in Washington, DC.  Colin received this award for his paper entitled “Ablation of Leptin Receptors in the Brain Subfornical Organ Attenuates Leptin-induced Increases in Renal SColinahaaward2012ympathetic Nerve Activity (RSNA) But Spares It’s Effect on Food Intake and Body Weight”. Congratulations, Colin! 10/1/12

  • Dr. Colin Young, postdoctoral associate in the Davisson Lab was selected by the American Heart Association as a recipient of the “Best of AHA Specialty Conferences” award.  Colin’s abstract entitled “Ablation of Leptin Receptors in the Brain Subfornical Organ Attenuates Leptin-induced Increases in Renal Sympathetic Nerve Activity (RSNA) But Spares It’s Effect on Food Intake and Body Weight” were recognized among the top 10% of accepted abstracts in the AHA Specialty Conferences. Dr. Young will re-present this study at the national AHA Scientific Sessions in Los Angeles, November 3-7, 2012.  Abstracts in this session will be exposed to special international news media and will be covered in the AHA Scientific Sessions news breaks.  Congratulations, Colin! 10/1/12

  • On Saturday, May 5, 2012 the Davisson, Cohen and Weiss labs participated in the Zeppy 5K Run at the Cornell Plantations.  The three labs decided to have a little friendly inter-lab competition between them.  The Cohen lab was beaten fair and square and will plan to host a future Happy Hour for the three labs!  6/12/12

  • Serena Chiang, an undergraduate in the Davisson Ithaca-labSerenaC from 2008-2010 has been accepted into the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  Congratulations, Serena! 6/12/12

  • Dr. Colin Young from the Davisson-Ithaca lab was awarded first ColinYplace in the Trainee Highlights in Physiological Genomics Session at the Experimental Biology 2012 meeting (San Diego, CA) for his abstract “Endoplasmic reticulum stress mediates nuclear factor-K-B activation in the subfornical organ during slow-pressor angiotensin-II hypertension.”  This award recognizes the most outstanding oral presentation given by a trainee within the Physiological Genomics Featured Topic session.  Congratulations Colin! 5/31/12

  • Dr. Heinrich Lob from the Davisson-Ithaca lab was awarded an LobEarly Career Research Recognition Award by the American Physiological Society (Neural Control and Autonomic Regulation Section) at the Experimental Biology 2012 meeting (San Diego, CA) for his abstract, "p22phox in the Paraventricular Nucleus of
the Brain Contributes to Diet-induced Obesity." This award is given to senior postdocs or early career faculty whose current and past work contributes significantly to a better understanding of neural control and autonomic regulation of physiological function. Dr. Lob showed in his study that prevention of oxidative stress in an important brain structure that regulates cardiovascular and energy homeostasis blocks weight gain during high fat feeding in mice. This is a novel finding which might lead to further insight in the central nervous system regulation of obesity. Congratulations, Heinrich!

  • Anfei Li, an undergraduate in Biological and EnvironmAnfeiPhoto2012ental Engineering and a student in the Davisson Cornell-Ithaca Lab who works closely with postdoc Dr. Colin Young, has been awarded the 2012 David S. Bruce Outstanding Undergraduate Abstract Award by the American Physiological Society.  This award has been established for outstanding undergraduate students who are presenting their physiological research at the Experimental Biology Meeting.  Anfei will be presenting his poster entitled "Angiotensin type 1A receptors (AT1a) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediate nuclear factor-k-B (NF-kB) activation in the subfornical organ (SFO) during slow-pressor Angiotensin-II (Ang-II) hypertension" at the 2012 Experimental Biology Meeting on April 22, 2012 in San Diego, CA. In addition, Anfei will be presenting his study in an oral session to compete for an additional award at the EB meeting. Way to go Anfei! 3/14/12
