The Hooding Ceremony

The academic hood not only represents the degree held by the wearer but also the institution which awarded it. Thus, the hood is made with traditional gray for veterinary medicine and carnelian red and white for Cornell.

The Hooding was held at Bailey Hall on Saturday, May 23 at 2 pm. Candidates for the degree, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and CUHA interns and residents completing programs assemble with parents, friends, spouses, partners, colleagues, faculty and guests. Dean Kotlikoff addressed the assembly and placed the hood representing the DVM degree on each candidate. Here is his address to the assembly. The Veterinary Oath was administered by Dr. Edward B. Chapman '77, President of the New York State Veterinary Medical Society. Dr. Stuart Bliss (Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award - 2009) delivered the traditional charge to the class. Professor Gilbert recognized the interns and residents who have completed programs in the Hospital. Here are some of those photographs.

Annie Li - Steven Friedenberg
An endowment for this prize was originally given by Mr. Horace K. White for the student with the highest academic record during veterinary training. This award, originally called the President's Prize, dates to 1873 and is probably the longest-standing prize at Cornell. In 1965, Ms. Mary Wells Miller Ewing established this award in memory of her husband, Dr. Malcolm E. Miller '34, a professor of anatomy and head of that Department from 1947-1960. The recipient is a fourth-year veterinary student who, in the judgment of the Dean, has demonstrated perseverance, scholastic diligence, and other personal characteristics that will bring credit and distinction to the veterinary profession. This award, endowed in 1993, is for the fourth-year student(s) who most successfully demonstrate(s) potential for professional and /or academic leadership in veterinary medicine.
