Sarah Caddy

Cambridge
Class of 2009

Background: I was raised in the town of Haywards Heath in the South of England. Working on my secondary school farm and volunteering at local veterinary clinics helped me to develop an early interest in animals. I knew I wanted to study veterinary medicine at university, and chose to follow my Grandpa's footsteps by going to Cambridge. Before university, I took a gap year during which I saw veterinary practice in Canada for six months as well as being involved in epidemiological research in Syria for three months. During my undergraduate studies at Cambridge, as well as studying a broad range of biological sciences, I specialized in immunology and dynamics of infectious disease. This specialization included a research project focusing on chronic wasting disease, a prion disease of deer species. After completing my pre-clinical studies in June 2006, I spent the summer gaining further research experience at the Royal Danish Vet School. The internship investigated the process of fetal metabolic programming using a sheep model. Currently I am working towards my VetMB at Cambridge and hope to graduate in the summer of 2009.

Interests: My main area of veterinary interest focuses on infectious diseases. I find infectious agents with the potential to affect animal and human populations worldwide particularly fascinating. My love of traveling and exploring different cultures contributes to this interest. In my free time I enjoy learning new languages and am currently studying Mandarin. I also play mixed lacrosse for my college as well as being an assistant guider with the 1st Cambridge Brownie pack!

Career Goal: After a grounding in mixed vet practice, I would like to do a PhD in the field of infectious diseases. This will hopefully lead to further research opportunities in this field. Ultimately, I would like to aid in the development of infectious disease control policies on a national or international scale.
