Laura Grogan

University of Sydney
Class of 2007

Background: Brought up in beautiful subtropical rainforest just inland of the most easterly point in Australia, Byron Bay, I have always had a strong attachment to wildlife, and rainforests. My youth instilled in me a sense of adventure, and an intrinsic connection to the environment around me. I developed a love of nature-photography and wildlife art, and from an early age decided that I would pursue my conservation ideals through veterinary science. I attended the University of Sydney for my Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree, taking a year out to gain research experience in the form of the Bachelor of Science (Veterinary). It was during this year that I discovered my absolute fascination with research, and I have subsequently been pursuing the fields of epidemiology, biosecurity, ecology and wildlife conservation in my final years of veterinary science.

Interests: My interests include research (of everything, in all its forms), philosophy, aesthetics, nifty modern technology, and of course wildlife.

Career Goal: My career goal is to become an international leader in wildlife veterinary epidemiology, biosecurity, ecology and conservation. My dream is to establish a dedicated research and education centre for international tropical biodiversity that may lead developments in biosecurity, public health, wildlife and agricultural epidemiology. I hope for it to be a center also capable of finding sustainable humanitarian management solutions for communities in the critically endangered ecosystems of tropical third world countries.
