Ciara Murphy

University College Dublin
Class of 2010

Background: I am a Dublin girl, born and raised. I completed a Bachelor of Animal Science at University College Dublin in 1999 then went to the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Centre, Kentucky, USA for one year. While there, I studied and worked in the Equine Arteritis Virus diagnostic laboratory. Following that, in 2001, I began my doctoral research on the pathogenesis of foot and mouth disease in Pigs, at the Institute for Animal Health, Surrey, UK. My laboratory training includes molecular biology techniques such as RNA extraction, reverse transcription, quantitative real time PCR and plasmid cloning. I also have experience in cell culture, virus propagation, ELISA and interferon bioassays. In addition, I have spent a lot of time working in high containment animal isolation units.

Interests: I enjoy cinema and theater, keeping fit, horse riding, reading a good book and spending time with my family, friends and pets.

Career Goal: I am considering further specialization after I qualify by hopefully being accepted into a residency program at an institution where high quality research is paramount. Ultimately I wish to be able to work as both a clinician and researcher, preferably in the equine field.
