Mihaiela Swift

University of Cambridge, UK
Class of 2009

Background: I was brought up in the UK, and am currently studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Cambridge. I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Natural Sciences Tripos in July 2006, majoring in pathology, and am now undergoing my clinical training. My laboratory training includes a range of basic practical skills gained during the first two years of my course, and a more detailed practical background in the field of virology and its associated genetics from an extended project on Herpes Simplex Virus resistance dynamics.

Interests: Academically I am particularly interested in the dynamics and control of the spread of infectious diseases. My non-academic interests include horse riding, competing in dressage and badminton, yacht sailing, and playing the clarinet and piano, both solo and within orchestras.

Career Goal: Once qualified as a vet, I aim to undertake a Masters in the field of epidemiology, and gain a relevant PhD in infectious disease research. My ultimate goal is to hold a position in either an academic institution or within the government, with the ability to influence, adapt and implement disease control policies.
