Cornell Summer Research and Leadership Program
Background: I was born in 1983 in Wernigerode, Germany, and was raised in a large wonderful family. Fascinated by working with animals, but above all inspired from the many different scientific, clinical and practical subjects of the veterinary medicine, I began to study veterinary medicine at the Freie University of Berlin in October 2003 and will presumably graduate in spring 2009. For me the most important aspect for taking up a medical profession was that the field of knowledge is continuously developing because scientific progress demands lifelong learning. During my study I want to gain experiences in veterinary surgical practice as well as research. I was already able to gain some research experiences at the institute of veterinary biochemistry, where I have volunteered since November 2005. Now I am employed as a tutor at the institute of veterinary biochemistry and I am able to work both with students and in research. Interests: I like badminton, basketball, riding and swimming and love being outdoors, enjoying nature with my family and friends. I also play tenor and baritone saxophone and piano and participate in the brass ensemble of the veterinary medicine students. On another front I'm engaged in animal welfare projects, for example in the rescue of farmed bears in China (Animals Asia Foundation). Career Goal: Even before beginning my study I was conscious that the veterinary profession offers many fields, e.g. veterinary practice, research or veterinary public health. I am interested in clinical work, basic research and in teaching students. I am particularly interested in the gastrointestinal tract and functions of epithelial tissues under influence of stress, food, microorganisms or toxins on the intestinal flora. |
