Cornell Summer Research and Leadership Program
Applying to the Leadership Program
The 2009 Leadership Program will begin on Monday, June 1st and end on Wednesday, August 12th.
Both national and international students who meet the criteria specified below are eligible to participate in the Leadership Program. The program requires a full-time commitment. The compact schedule and interactive nature of program events precludes part-time employment or professional activities other than those connected with the program. Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss their candidacy with faculty advisors or students who have participated in the program in earlier years. Applicants must:
- Have completed one year of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or its equivalent by June 1st of the program year for which they apply.
- Be at least six months from graduation in an accredited veterinary college.
- Have a strong interest in research. The program is not recommended for students who see their definitive future in private practice.
Competition for Leadership Program fellowships is intense. Although the life experiences, culture, and academic backgrounds of program fellows are diverse, all are highly motivated, and possess the ability to become future leaders in academic veterinary medicine and the biomedical sciences at large. Criteria for student selection are based on the following:
- Academic record
- Work experience
- Research accomplishments (if relevant)
- Personal achievements
- Leadership potential
- Demonstrated interest in a research career
Application forms for the 2009 program can be downloaded from this website. One form is intended for Cornell students; veterinary students from other colleges and schools should use the form prepared specifically for them.
A completed application must include the following material. Please refer to the application form for detailed instructions.
Application Form
First page should be filled out and signed. A generic email address is preferred but not required.
A. College/University Education
List all degrees received and expected to be received (including current veterinary training). Institution, Date Attended, Degree, Major, Date Received/Expected and class rank (if known) should be provided.
B. Transcripts
Submit unopened, official transcripts from each college or university attended with your application materials. The universities or colleges should mail the transcripts directly to you. It is not necessary to submit transcripts for current semester grades as they will not be available by the application deadline.
C. Curriculum Vitae
Including the following information:
Academic and Professional Honors - Specify name, purpose, sponsor and date of each award.
Work Experience - Include all work experience whether part-time, full-time or voluntary.
Publications (if relevant) - Citations should list authors, full title, journal, volume, page numbers and year of publication. Three reprints of each publication are requested but are not required.
Personal Interests and Achievements. Typical entries include but are not limited to musical ability, athletic activities, debating experience, and other activities that reflect leadership and personal achievement.
D. Career Goals and Relevant Experience
No more than 300 word essay summarizing objectives of your educational program and long-range professional goals.
E. Research Preferences
List project area preferences based on provided list.
F. References
It is important that references be carefully selected. The individual writing a letter in support of your application (referee) should be able to comment on your qualifications for a career in your chosen field of study. At least two reference letters, but no more than four, should be submitted with the application. Referees will need the "Guidance for Referees" form (see application) well before the application deadline so that the letter can be included with all other application material. Please note that all reference letters should be confidential and enclosed in a sealed envelope signed across the enclosure.
