Summer Research Opportunities for DVM Students
As a veterinary student, would you like to explore research in a short-term program that may inspire your scientific tendencies? There are a number of opportunities for veterinary students to participate in summer research programs at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
These programs are designed to give veterinary students and/or veterinarians an introduction to scientific research methodology and an appreciation of their application to clinical medicine. If you want to develop (or hone) research skills or if you want to see if clinical research is for you, you have plenty of opportunities here!
Each of these programs has their own admission process; check the program web page or contact the Director of the program you are interested in for more information.
- Leadership Program
- This is a highly-intensive, research-oriented 10 week summer program. Highly-motivated veterinary students from the United States and abroad who seek leadership roles in the veterinary profession through a science-based career are encouraged to apply.
- Veterinary Investigators Program (VIP)
- This is a 10-week summer program designed to provide first- and second-year veterinary students with research skills and knowledge of the role that biomedical research plays in veterinary medicine. Cornell DVM students are encouraged to sustain the program throughout their years at the College. Two spaces are reserved for veterinary students from other institutions.
- Veterinary Training in Biomedical Research
- Designed for first- through third-year Cornell veterinary students, this NIH-funded program helps vet students discover the synergy between veterinary medical education and biomedical research. The program requires a on-year full-time commitment by the student.
- Aquavet
- This is a joint program sponsored by the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine in collaboration with marine science institutions at Woods Hole, Massachusetts: the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Northeast Fisheries Science Center of the National Marine Fisheries Service, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. It provides a limited number of fellowships for students to pursue an eight-week summer research project.
- Food Animal Medicine Externship (FAME)
- This summer program is open to up to six current first-year Cornell veterinary students. Through on-farm experience, practice focusing on herd health and research, participants gain knowledge and insight into food supply veterinary medicine. A stipend is provided, but participating students must have their own transportation. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Daryl Nydam.
- Summer Dairy Institute
- This eight-week summer course is designed for third- and fourth-year veterinary students from an AAVMC-accredited institution who are interested in dairy cattle. The course consists of classroom and wet lab instruction as well as a number of farm activities.
- Havemeyer Foundation Equine Research Fellowships
- This ten-week program allows first-, second- or third-year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine in the United States and abroad to participate in current projects at the Equine Genetics Center of the Baker Institute for Animal Health. Start dates are flexible for any consecutive 10-week period between May and September.
