Graduate Field of Immunology
The first formal course on immunology was offered in the early sixties on the Ithaca
Campus. Since that time, a number of faculty whose major interest is immunology have been appointed to various colleges and units of the University. The Graduate Field of Immunology was formed in 1982.
The Field of Immunology offers advanced training in cellular immunology, immunochemistry, immunogenetics, immunopathology, and infection and immunity. Faculty in the Field are members of various colleges and units of Cornell University. The goal of the field is to provide students with broad training in both the underlying mechanisms responsible for vertebrate immunity, and the means by which to study the host's immune response.
The Graduate Field of Immunology is one of several graduate fields that make up the Graduate Program in Biological and Biomedical Sciences of Cornell University. Students admitted into the Program are guaranteed to receive funding (including tuition, student health insurance and a stipend) for the duration of their
graduate program. Funding for the first year is provided by the Graduate Program; in subsequent years funding is provided by the thesis advisor. More information on this umbrella program can be found at the Biological and Biomedical Sciences website.
The Field also participates in the inter-college graduate program Infection and Pathobiology, which was created in 2000 to facilitate interaction among scholars and students of different disciplines who share common interests in host-pathogen interactions.
