Cornell Summer Research and Leadership Program
Program Description and Benefits
The Leadership Program for Veterinary Students at Cornell University is a unique summer experience for veterinary students who seek to broadly influence the veterinary profession through a science-based career. The program is an intensive, research-oriented initiative that combines faculty-guided research with vocational counseling, student-directed learning, and other professional enrichment activities.
Approximately twenty-five veterinary students from the United States and abroad are accepted into the program each year. Qualified applicants are highly motivated individuals who have distinguished themselves in a variety of professional and personal pursuits. The life experiences, culture, and academic backgrounds of qualified applicants are diverse, but all possesses the ability to become future leaders in academic veterinary medicine and the biomedical sciences at large.
Program Benefits
Successful candidates will be awarded scholarships that will enable them to spend ten weeks at Cornell during the summer. Program benefits include:
- $4,750 honorarium (subject to U.S. income tax)

- Research: Participants in the program pursue individual research projects under the guidance of faculty members who are successful scientists and experienced mentors. Realistic progress can be made on projects during the ten week period that the program is in session. The goal is to provide insight into the planning and conduct of experiments, data evaluation, and how one effectively uses the human and material resources of a research laboratory. Projects in which students work independently are selected by a faculty committee. At the conclusion of the program, students present their research findings in a public forum and contribute to the preparation of a program report.
- Modules and Workshops: Participants engage in group projects calculated to develop leadership skills and an awareness of the opportunities for advanced training in research and public health. The student driven workshops encourage responsible leadership through the development of analytical, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills.
