Why Cornell?

Welcome Prospective Students,

As you are beginning to explore your options for graduate study, I would encourage you to seriously consider applying to Cornell University. Cornell's graduate program is exciting and unique, emphasizing flexibility and independence and permitting an unusual degree of accommodation to the needs and research interests of each student. You will find the faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine to be excellent researchers, well respected in their field of study and committed, both philosophically and financially, to supporting graduate student education.

Our physical facilities are state of the art and include new and recently renovated laboratories in the Veterinary Medical Center and Veterinary Research Tower and a $12 million research wing at the Baker Institute. You also will have ample access to other facilities across the campus, including the biotechnology center and the nanofabrication facility.

Cornell's location in the Finger Lakes region of Central New York makes the University appealing for much more than just its superb academic environment. The campus, acknowledged as one of the most beautiful in the world, overlooks Cayuga Lake and the city of Ithaca, a small but cosmopolitan urban center.

The final and most important reason to consider graduate study at the College of Veterinary Medicine is the graduate students themselves. At Cornell, you will discover future colleagues and lifelong friends that are among the most talented and industrious individuals anywhere. Most importantly, you will find the Cornell environment to be friendly, open and sincere in its desire to help you succeed.

I wish you the best of luck in your graduate studies exploration. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the College of Veterinary Medicine's Office of Graduate Education at graduate_edcvm@cornell.edu.

Sincerely,
Robert F. Gilmour, Jr.
Associate Dean for Graduate Education and Research

Why Cornell?

Reputation: Cornell University has an international reputation as the most comprehensive school in the Ivy League, boasting nine privately endowed schools, four state-supported schools and more than twenty interdisciplinary research centers. The Cornell Library system is one of the largest academic research libraries in the country.

Program: Cornell's graduate program is exciting because it is based on individualism, flexibility and independence; each student designs and implements his/her own program of study. The structure of the Graduate School is based on "Fields of Study" that are centered on a specific research area but may include faculty members from different departments and colleges on campus, which helps to encourage student interaction with faculty from a wide variety of disciplines. The student is primarily responsible for organizing his/her "Special Committee" from among all of the graduate faculty and this committee, in turn, helps the student to design and implement their unique PhD program.

Faculty: Cornell's faculty are outstanding. The Graduate Faculty includes more than 1,500 members, including Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize recipients and members of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as a variety of other prestigious associations. Many receive funding through organizations such as the National Institutes for Health (N.I.H.), the National Science Foundation (N.S.F.) and the United States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.). They are on the cutting edge of a number of scientific research areas. In addition, Cornell graduate faculty are truly available to students. The Graduate Field system is designed to help promote close collegiality between students and faculty.

Students: The graduate students at Cornell are outstanding as well. Dedicated, talented and hardworking, many students also take the time to make a positive difference in graduate student life in the University by participating in one or more of the many student-run organizations. Individual students come together to form lifelong friendships and collaborate with future colleagues. Cornell graduates go on to positions in academia as well as business and industry.

Location: Cornell is located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of Central New York State in the city of Ithaca. The campus has many areas of natural beauty -- from Beebe Lake to the Cornell Plantations and is surrounded by scenic beauty of Cayuga Lake, and dozens of parks and gorges that are the hallmark of the area.

Ithaca is a growing cosmopolitan area that has managed to maintain a small-town atmosphere. However, it is one hour by plane and approximately four hours by car from New York City and close to many other urban centers. In Cities Ranked and Listed, Ithaca was ranked number one as the best "emerging" area to live.
