About the DNA Bank
What is the DNA Bank?
- First started in January 2006, the Cornell DNA bank is a repository of DNA and medical information that is based in the College of Veterinary Medicine, at Cornell University.
- With owner consent, a blood sample is collected at the time of appointment and pertinent medical information is recorded in the bank database.
How Does This Help Us?
- Our bank will provide clinicians and pre-clinical scientists with the basis of genetic investigation: the DNA and medical information that accurately defines inherited diseases in our patients.
- Investigators relate the genetic information present in the DNA to the medical information to find the underlying contributing, protective or causative genes.
- Researchers the use the information to develop better diagnosis methods (such as genetic tests), treatments and new drugs.
Do These Studies Apply Only to Animals?
- No! Many of the diseases we study and find genes for affect humans, as well.
- Not only is your pet’s DNA contributing to a future of better, healthier animals, it may also improve the lives of people that are affected with the same (or similar) disease.
Who Can Donate DNA?
- Any purebred animal or exotic patient that presents to one of our hospitals (Cornell University Hospital for Animals or Cornell University Veterinary Specialists) with a disease of interest. Please click HERE to learn about the diseases we’re interested in studying.
How Does The DNA Bank help you?
- Although your DNA donations will not yield immediate medical benefits to your companion animal, they will provide the basis for important research to prevent, treat, or cure the condition in other pets afflicted with the same disease. So your animal’s contribution is helping us make sure no other family has to go through the same devastating disease that brought you to us in the first place.
