Title: Ultrasound Measurement as an Indicator of Pain and Distress
in Laboratory Rodents
Annual Direct Cost: $6,000
Project Period: 2/29/04-1/31/05
My objective is to measure the emission of rodent vocalizations made at the ultrasonic level and inaudible to the human ear as an indicator of pain and distress. It is possible to measure the ultrasonic emissions of rodents using specialized recording devices. I would like to purchase this recording equipment to use as a diagnostic tool as one would use equipment such as a stethoscope for collection of data during clinical assessments of animals suspected to be in discomfort. The data collected would be analyzed and used to implement refinements to research studies to reduce the level of pain and discomfort and thus improve the welfare of these animals.
