Annual Direct Cost: $87,676
Project Period: 05/15/05-05/14/07

The Minor Use Animal Drug Program, National Research Support Project 7 (NRSP 7) was initiated with the primary focus to facilitate the labeling of therapeutic compounds for use in minor species animals and for minor uses in major species. For purposes of this project, minor species are those animals that are not considered to be major agricultural species (horses, cattle, swine, chickens, turkeys). Examples of animals falling within the minor species category are rabbits, small game birds (pheasants, partridge), goats, sheep, llamas, ratites, fish and aquatic invertebrates. The therapeutic needs of these minor species food and fiber animals are evaluated and specific therapeutic compounds are evaluated with the objective of developing the data needed by the FDA to grant a label for those chosen compounds. Research projects const of studies of efficacy, target animal safety, human food safety (tissue elimination) and environmental assessments.
