Title: The Persistence of Subclinical Endometritis in Postpartum Dairy Cows
Annual Direct Cost: $15,000
Project Period: 07/01/2004-06/30/2005
Subclinical endometritis is common at the end of the voluntary waiting period, and severely impedes reproductive performance, resulting in more days open, lower first service conception rate, more services per conception and a higher proportion culled. Although uterine inflammation (endometritis) is common, literature suggests that the vast majority of cows have rid themselves of uterine infection by this stage. This project seeks to determine if cows with subclinical endometritis at 7 weeks postpartum are or are not infected with bacteria. We will also examine whether uterine infection at 5 weeks postpartum is associated with persistent inflammation 2 weeks later. This information is critical to the development of rational strategies for treatment or prevention of subclinical endometritis.
