Title: Differential Muscle Function in Locomotion: The Equine Forelimb as a Model System of "Gearing" in Running Gaits
Annual Direct Cost: $6,696
Project Period: 06/01/05-05/31/06

To demonstrate the degree of eccentric contraction exhibited in the short and deep digital flexor muscles of the equine forelimb during normal walk, trot, and canter gaits. This represents a new paradigm for muscle function during locomotion that does not involve the production of work by a muscle but instead highlights the importance of elastic energy storage during cyclic activity.
