Title: Clinical Training Fellowship Proposal: PhD/Cardiology Residency Program
Annual Direct Cost: $14,000
Project Period: 11/1/07 - 10/31/12

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): This program is a 7-year training experience that will encompass advanced clinical training of cardiology (30%) and a rigorous PhD program (70%). The goal is to have Dr. Jung trained at the highest level in both clinical medicine and science. This program permits periods of parallel training so that there is not a loss of knowledge as occurs with divided training (e.g., residency training followed by a research experience). The first 2 years have been devoted to graduate courses with occasional clinical work. This will be followed by shared time of research and clinics. And finally, a period of intensive clinical work will take place before the board certification examination in cardiology. This combined program will work because there is a link and interdependence of the clinical and research training due to the nature of the project. The PhD program will be under the guidance of Dr. Gunn and the residency program under the guidance of Dr. Moïse, Section Chief of Cardiology. Additional mentorship will come from others in the cardiology team including, but not limited to Drs. Robert Gilmour and Bruce Kornreich with regards to the research training and also from Drs. Marc Kraus, Anna Gelzer, and Bruce Kornreich for the clinical training. The research project involves the determination of the genetic cause of inherited arrhythmias and sudden death in German shepherd dogs which is a subject that links our group. Dr. Jung will learn state of the art techniques in mapping genes, linkage analysis, protein and gene expression, and other current methodologies that can be applied to other diseases of animals.
