Title: Defining the Antineoplastic Properties of Astaxanthin and
Lycopene on Canine Osteosarcoma and Transitional Cell
Carcinoma Cell Lines
Annual Direct Cost: $12,500
Project Period: 07/01/07-12/31/08
DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): The examination of natural compounds influence on disease processes is one of the foundations for supplements and therapeutic diets. 5-LOX inhibition has been approached pharmaceutically in the canine osteoarthritis, but little work has been done to identify whether 5-LOX activity plays a role in canine or feline neoplastic diseases. Our preliminary results, in conjunction with recent human and rat studies suggest that certain natural carotenoids may be able to inhibit 5-LOX and diminish neoplastic cell growth. If this is indeed proven in our cell culture models, then further investigation into the use of such carotenoids (i.e., astaxanthin and lycopene) in clinical cases of osteosarcoma or transitional cell carcinoma may be warranted. Hopefully, these carotenoids will be used in conjunction with chemotherapy and irradiation protocols to diminish cancer growth in the future.
