Title: Freshwater Adaptation and Early Invasion of Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia Virus into the Great Lakes Basin
Annual Direct Cost: $57,866
Project Period: 02/01/07-01/31/09

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus was isolated from muskellunge from Lake St. Claire, Michigan and from freshwater environment from Lake Ontario during the summer of 2005. VHSV is an OIE notifiable disease that can have devastating impacts on some populations of fish. The impact of this new isolate, which appears to be different from the known North American marine isolates of VHSV, on the fisheries resources of New York as well as the Great Lakes Basin is not known. However, the finding of VHSV in a totally freshwater environment in North America for the first time suggests that this virus, which is capable of significant mutations, may have changed as it moved into the Great Lakes Basin. This proposal is an effort to better equip us with the most contemporary molecular diagnostic capabilities so that we will be better positioned to meet the challenge of this new and emerging disease.
