Title: Oral Pregabalin as an Add-On Therapy for Refractory Idopathic Epilepsy in Dogs
Annual Direct Cost: $8,860
Project Period: 02/01/07-01/31/08

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): Idiopathic epilepsy is the most common medical neurologic disease affecting dogs, and approximately 25%-30% of these patients are refractory to the standard epileptic drugs phenobarbital and potassium bromide. Pregabalin is a newly released drug for human use, chemically related to gabapentin; pregabalin is considered the successor to gabapentin, having improved anticonvulsant efficacy in both rodent seizure models and human clinical trials, with fewer side effects than gabapentin. Gabapentin is widely used in dogs for both seizures and for neuropathic pain. Recent evidence suggests that gabapentin is moderately effective as an add-on anticonvulsant for dogs, with minimal adverse side-effects (e.g., mild sedation, weight gain). The purpose of this pilot clinical trial is to investigate the efficacy of pregabalin as an add-on anticonvulsant in ten epileptic dogs refractory to phenobarbital and/or bromide therapy.
