Title: Engineering Functional Microvascular Structure in vitro
Annual Direct Cost: $100,000
Project Period: 04/01/07-03/31/08

DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): The microvascular system is the ubiquitous infrastructure that mediates interaction and exchange between circulating molecular and cellular agents and solid tissues. This structure is implicated in myriad healthy (e.g., healing) and pathological (e.g., cancer metastasis) processes. In this project, we aim to advance three important goals: i) understanding of the drivers and dynamics of vasculogenesis and angiogenesis; ii) development of an accurate model of the endothelial barrier as it serves to mediate metastasis and pharmacokinetics; and iii) engineering functional vascular structure within 3-D scaffolds for tissues in the context of regenerative medicine.
