Title: Cornell University Avian Influenza Multimedia Project
Annual Direct Cost: $455,537
Project Period: 08/15/07-09/30/08

Summary: Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (Cornell) will develop a set of multimedia training resources designed to improve poultry disease recognition, diagnostic capabilities, and disease preparedness among veterinarians and other animal health professionals. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), to promote better poultry medicine practices both domestically and abroad will utilize the resources.

Objectives: The first objective of the project is to develop a set of detailed instructional training videos demonstrating the clinical examination of the live chicken, the proper methodology of the necropsy examination, and the collection and submission of high-quality diagnostic samples for laboratory testing. The diagnostic principles of Avian Influenza and its differential rule outs (see Addendum A) will be emphasized throughout the videos.

The videos will make use of innovative multimedia technology, using a combination of narrated live action video and photorealistic 3-D animation, to clarify key steps in the procedures. The videos will be delivered in a web-based environment as well as on DVD discs, suitable for use in computers and TV/DVD players.

The second objective of the project is to create an Atlas of Avian Diseases which will hold a dynamic collection of digital images demonstrating a variety of avian diseases and conditions, including but not limited to Avian Influenza. This system will closely parallel the Bovine Necropsy Atlas recently developed by Cornell University, under a cooperative agreement by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and APHIS (online at http://w3.vet.cornell.edu/virtualvet/). The Atlas of Avian Diseases will function as both an educational and diagnostic tool for veterinarians and animal health professionals. Users may conduct a search by selecting a lesion location (e.g. combs and wattles), lesion type (e.g. petechiae), or disease name (e.g. Avian Influenza). Images meeting the search criteria are then displayed in "stacks" that can be reviewed, sorted, and cross-referenced in a variety of ways to allow users to quickly build a differential diagnosis based on information obtained during the ante-mortem and post-mortem examinations. The Atlas of Avian Diseases will be delivered in both a web-based environment as well as on CD-ROM discs, for use in computers.

The instructional videos and the Atlas of Avian Diseases are designed to work in a complementary fashion. The videos, with their step-by-step training, will help to ensure that pertinent clinical signs and post-mortem lesions are properly identified by the examiner. The Atlas will assist veterinarians in generating an accurate and complete differential diagnosis, including uncommon diseases that may otherwise be forgotten, helping to ensure the proper and timely course of action is taken with regard to diagnostic specimen collection, patient and/or flock treatment, quarantine, and reporting.
