Title: Role of miR-34 in Ovarian Cancer
Annual Direct Cost: $30,000
Project Period: 04/01/08-03/31/09
DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant): MicroRNAs are non-coding genes which are important for regulation of other critical proteins in the cell. We have identified miR-34 family (miR-34a/b/c) of p53-regulated microRNAs that are found at reduced levels in human epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Our preliminary results indicate that re-expression of these microRNAs reduces proliferation, adhesion-independent growth and tumorigenicity of EOC cells. We propose that miR-34a/b/c act as tumor suppressors and reconstitution of their expression may be therapeutically beneficial. Our proposed studies will increase our basic understanding of these molecules and may open new horizons for development of new therapeutic approaches.
