Leadership
The Dean is the academic, administrative, and community leader of the college, responsible for developing the capacity of the college and moving associated programs forward in reputation, distinction and influence. The dean is expected to expand the intellectual, financial and human assets of the college, while serving as a critical member of the senior leadership team of Cornell University.
The various areas of the college are led by a team of assistant deans, associate deans, department chairs and directors who report directly to the dean. These members oversee the daily operations of their particular units and collaborate with the dean to fulfill the college's mission.
Austin O. Hooey Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University
Jessica McArt, D.V.M. ’07, Ph.D. ’13, serves as the Austin O. Hooey Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, and as professor of ambulatory and production medicine. Previously, McArt served as chair of the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences and section chief of the Ambulatory and Production Medicine Clinic.
McArt received her D.V.M. and Ph.D. in comparative biomedical sciences with an emphasis in epidemiology from Cornell, and a BA from Dartmouth College. She is a Diplomate in the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Dairy Practice). She joined the Cornell faculty in 2014, and served as a visiting scientist with the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action at Agriculture Victoria, a government institution in Bundoora, Australia, from 2023-24.
McArt’s research focuses on the identification, epidemiology, and economics of periparturient diseases in dairy cows and uses deterministic and stochastic/iterative modeling methods to investigate the economic impact of transition cow diseases and promote evidence-based management and treatment practices that optimize cow health and farm profits.
When she isn’t working, Dean McArt enjoys spending time with her partner and two daughters.

Volunteer Leadership
Staff Council
The CVM Staff Council was established in 2012 as a way for non-academic staff to provide input to college leadership on matters relating to the work environment. Responsibilities include:
- Facilitating communication between staff members and College Leadership
- Providing a forum for staff participation in relevant and important discussions
- Assisting in building a cohesive community, where the contributions of staff are recognized
