Canine influenza virus (CIV) was detected by PCR in a nasal swab sample submitted April 25, 2019 to the Animal Health Diagnostic Center from a single North Carolina dog.

The positive detection was somewhat unusual in that the dog had been exhibiting clinical signs including coughing and sneezing for at least 15 days. While influenza signs often persist for three weeks or longer, virus detection tests are most rewarding earlier in the clinical course of the illness.

We will attempt to type this virus and will report additional information as an addendum to this, if possible. Our canine influenza surveillance map (below) has been quiet recently.
