Research/Clinical Interests
My major research activities are centered around epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of multidrug resistant bacterial infections in humans and companion animals. Additionally, I collaborate with basic and translational scientists and engineers to facilitate their research programs. This work has been funded by federal, foundation, and industry sponsors and has resulted in >100 peer-reviewed research publications (>190 peer-reviewed publications overall). My h-index is 54 (Google Scholar; accessed June 2026). I have made the following key contributions:
- Identified and characterized the emerging threat of multidrug-resistant bacteria in humans and companion animals.
- Developed diagnostic assays for detecting carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales.
- Defined optimal antimicrobial susceptibility testing criteria for Staphylococcus species.
- Identified SARS-CoV-2 viral load as a contributor to mortality in hospitalized patients and characterized bacterial co-infections with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
