Keeping Aurora, her puppies and her family together

Aurora the dog with her puppies in a crate

When Aurora, a sweet and gentle pug, went into labor, her loving family eagerly awaited the arrival of her puppies. Two were born healthy at home, and all seemed well – until hours passed and Aurora seemed to be in distress. What should have been a joyful day quickly became a life-threatening emergency.

Her concerned family rushed her to an emergency veterinary hospital, where three more puppies were delivered. But Aurora was still in active labor – and something was terribly wrong. She was diagnosed with dystocia, a dangerous and often deadly complication during delivery. An ultrasound revealed heartbreaking news: a sixth puppy remained inside and had not survived. Immediate surgery was now Aurora’s only hope.

Already overwhelmed by mounting veterinary bills, her family was faced with an unthinkable decision: Euthanize Aurora, leaving five newborn puppies without their mother – or risk everything to save her.

That’s when they were referred to Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program – and because of donors like you, we were able to say yes.

Our team immediately performed emergency surgery to remove the deceased puppy and spay Aurora, a life-saving procedure that spared her from further pain and danger. In the days and weeks that followed, we continued to provide post-operative care, vaccinations, and veterinary support for both Aurora and her puppies – ensuring they all had the best possible chance at life.

Because of your generosity, a mother was saved, five puppies stayed with the mom who loves them, and a family was kept whole.

Aurora’s story is a powerful reminder that your support doesn’t just help animals – it helps the people who love them too. You make it possible for us to respond when emergencies strike, and to deliver compassionate, expert care when it’s needed most.

Thank you for giving Aurora – and so many others – the gift of life and love.
