Profile

Research/Clinical Interests

Research Focus
Imaging-based investigation of anatomy, disease, and diagnostic practice in animals

My research program uses imaging and epidemiologic methods to investigate how anatomic structure and variation relate to disease, and how diagnostic information is acquired, interpreted, and communicated. Two themes guide this work.

The first is anatomy. Accurate image interpretation depends on a strong understanding of normal and variant anatomy applied to the clinical problem at hand. Much of my research therefore examines anatomy as the foundation for understanding disease, whether the question is descriptive, pathologic, or clinically applied.

The second is diagnostic reasoning and communication. Drawing on clinical practice, resident education, and experience evaluating the veterinary imaging literature, this work focuses on how imaging evidence is interpreted, how diagnostic conclusions are supported, and how findings can be communicated clearly, consistently, and effectively. Current scholarship emphasizes the quality and structure of imaging reports, including the development of reporting standards and professional consensus recommendations. These principles also serve as a framework for resident training in diagnostic imaging.

Current and Recent Research Interests

  • Anatomic imaging of the canine thorax and abdomen, including pulmonary imaging, serous membranes, and intrahepatic portosystemic shunt classification
  • Cranial morphology and miniaturization in dogs, and their relationship to head and neck disease
  • Equine head and neck imaging, including styloid process and temporal region anatomy
  • Standards and recommendations for veterinary imaging reports (ACVR/ECVDI consensus initiatives)

Clinical Interests

CT and MRI; thoracic imaging; head and neck imaging
