Avangrid Grant to Support Avian Rehabilitation
Principal Investigator: Sara Childs-Sanford
DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant):
In 2026, the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital (SWH) is expected to begin construction of a flight aviary. This structure will be dedicated to the rehabilitation of bald and golden eagles. Our rehabilitation of eagles will serve two purposes. Firstly, there is a dire shortage of wildlife rehabilitators in NY with both the necessary licensing and acceptable facilities for rehabilitation eagles. Combined with an increasing eagle population in the state, there is a desperate need for eagle rehabilitation efforts. Secondly, rehabilitation will be a component our larger effort entitled the Bald and Golden Eagle Health and Conservation Program.
Due to rising costs of building supplies since we received funding to build our flight aviary, our entire budget will need to be used for construction of the bare-bones structure. Therefore, this proposal requests funding to cover the costs of outfitting the building with supplies needed for active use.
