This pilot study aims to produce preliminary data regarding the effect of colostrum quality on lipoprotein profiles in calves. Colostrum quality is a critical determinant of growth and survival outcomes in neonatal calves. Lipoproteins, such as Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL) and High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL), are biomarkers for immune modulation, growth, and nutrient transportation. Notably, HDL mediates much of the serum neutralization of lipopolysaccharide, a major endotoxin in the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Therefore, optimization of lipoprotein profiles in calves may reduce infectious disease risk and antibiotic use. However, whether colostrum quality influences the calf’s ability to generate functionally effective lipoproteins that modulate infectious disease remains unknown. We hypothesize that calves fed with high-quality colostrum will demonstrate altered lipoprotein profiles within the first 48 hours of life. The objective of this project is to assess the effects of colostrum quality on 1) Circulating plasma lipoprotein concentrations (HDL, LDL), 2) Serum IgG concentrations, 3) Average daily gain and body weight, and 4) Calf health and mortality. With increasing industry emphasis on antimicrobial stewardship and precision livestock health, there is an urgent need to identify calves with suboptimal lipoprotein profiles early in life for targeted health interventions rather than large-scale antibiotic treatments.
