Epidemiological Investigation of Chronic Wasting Disease Detection in a New York State Red Deer Herd
Principal Investigator: Krysten Schuler
DESCRIPTION (provided by applicant):
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) was recently detected in a red deer herd in Herkimer County. It is unknown how CWD arrived since no cases of CWD have been reported in NYS wild or captive animals since 2005. Possible origins include: (1) spontaneous generation, (2) introduction from an external source, or (3) a previously undetected outbreak in wild deer. We propose an epidemiological investigation.
