Juvenile renal disease (JRD) and granulomatous colitis (GC) are two serious diseases disproportionately affecting Boxers. JRD is a congenital kidney disorder that often leads to kidney failure early in life, while GC is a severe form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) linked to bacterial infection. Both diseases typically affect young dogs and can be fatal. In addition to GC, Boxers also suffer from lymphocytic-plasmacytic colitis, a related but distinct form of IBD not associated with bacterial infection. The goal of the proposed work is to identify the genetic variants underlying these diseases. This work could have a big impact by leading to genetic tests that would allow selective breeding to decrease disease frequency over time and support early screening and diagnosis for dogs at high-risk. Learning how these diseases work at the molecular level could eventually lead to better treatments for affected dogs.
