AHDC Update: New Bovine Viral Respiratory PCR Panel
For clients of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center
The Animal Health Diagnostic Center is now offering a Bovine Viral Respiratory PCR panel (test code BRPNL), which includes Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVD), Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Beta Coronavirus, Parainfluenza 3 Virus and Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (also called Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)). The cost is $100.
Appropriate sample types include a nasal swab or nasopharyngeal swab, fresh lung tissue, transtracheal wash fluid or bronchioalveolar lavage fluid in a sterile container. Submit swabs in sterile, sealed vials with several drops of saline added, to prevent desiccation. Bacterial gel transport media are not appropriate for PCR assays. Cotton, plastic, wood-handled, and Dacron and other synthetic swabs are all acceptable for PCR-based assays. Calcium alginate swabs should be avoided. Aerobic and Mycoplasma cultures are recommended for lung tissue samples. If culture is desired, submit a separate swab in an acceptable bacterial transport media.
